Fietsproject in Jufferey
We zijn weer terug! Helemaal veilig en wel! Het heeft even geduurt voordat we weer wat plaatsen, maar hier is dan nog een deel van het project die Jasper en Pieter hebben gedaan in Jufferey, bij James Island. Er volgt nog meer.
Fietsonderhoud en verhuur project, Jufferey.
Op zondag 29 maart vertrokken wij, Jasper en Pieter, naar James Island, Jufferey / Albreida om de drama groep die daar is te helpen met het opzetten van een fietsverhuur aan toeristen. Dit om inkomen te genereren voor de drama groep. De drama groep doet voorstellingen in dorpjes en steden om de gevaren van de ziektes AIDS en malaria te laten zien. Om de fietsen in goede staat te houden hebben ze ook een deel onderhoud ondersteuning nodig.
Zondag morgen zijn we vertrokken met de Pajero op weg naar Jufferey. Bij de boot moeten we een paas uur wachten maar via wat weggetjes weten we er toch redelijk snel op te komen. Aan de overkant kunnen we gemakkelijk de weg vinden naar Jufferey. We hebben geen haast en het gaat prima. Tegen het einde van de middag komen we aan en gaan we op zoek naar een lodge. We vinden een redelijk luxe met stromend water en electriciteit.
Ook de bedden zijn goed en we hebben 2 ventilatoren in het huisje, waarvan één het niet doet omdat het snoer niet bij het stopcontact kan komen. We genieten van de warmte en de ondergaande zon en een heerlijk bord erwtensoep! S’avonds hebben we even stroom, maar al gauw blijkt de generator kapot te zijn. We proberen nog te helpen maar hij werkt niet.
De volgende dag staan we op tijd op om te ontbijten. Rond 9 uur besluiten we te zoeken naar de drama groep om ons project te starten. We komen ze tegen en vragen of we kunnen beginnen. Omdat ze nog niet op ons hadden gerekend hebben ze degene die les zouden krijgen gezegt dat we woensdag pas zouden beginnen. Dit is voor ons te laat dus we spreken dinsdag af. Dit is goed en wij gaan weer terug naar de Lodge. Het is erg warm en er is weinig te doen. Het enige wat we kunnen doen is muziek luisteren op de mp3 speler en zitten of op bed liggen. Een erg relax en rustig dagje. Af en toe kijken we nog bij de generator die ze tevergeefs proberen te repareren.
Zelfs een monteur die erbij gekomen is lukt het niet. S’avonds kijken we een film op de laptop in de auto en gaan op tijd slapen.
Dinsdagmorgen beginnen we na het ontbijt met het onderhoudsproject. We maken kennis met de ‘leerlingen’ Het zijn er vier. Een man die wel een beetje verstand van techniek heeft. Een meid van een jaar of 20 en 2 jonge jongens van 13 en 16 jaar ongeveer. We vragen ons af wat we hier van kunnen verwachten maar gaan gewoon aan de slag. We geven les tot 12 uur omdat het anders te warm is om te werken. We beginnen gewoon met de basis van de fiets en het plakken van de band. Dit pakken ze goed op. S’middags is weer een vrije middag waarin we niet veel te doen hebben. Tegen 4 uur komt een persoon van de drama groep naar ons toe om te vragen of we wat van de omgeving willen zien. Dat willen we, dus we gaan met hem mee naar Dog Island. Een mooie omgeving en een leuke bushroute brengt ons naar een mooi strand. Vooral dwars door het bos rijden is erg gaaf om te doen! Bij het strand is een lodge die er mooi maar verlaten uitziet. Als we terug komen zijn Rick en Piet van het camera team er ook. Dit is wel erg gezellig en we gaan samen met hun eten.
Woensdag geven we weer les. Hierbij gaat het soms toch wat moeizamer omdat je merkt dat vooral de jongens en de meid niet zo heel veel technische kennis hebben. Al doende leert men, dus we doen alleen maar praktijk. Er wordt veel geknikt en ja gezegt dus we hopen maar dat ze het begrijpen. Er is niet heel veel stof om te geven, maar we verdelen het netjes. S’middags gaan we weer op pad met de ‘gids’ op weg naar dorpjes en natuur. Hij laat ons veel mooie dingen zien en we rijden weer een echte bushroute. Als we terug komen wachten we op de vier jongens die onderweg naar ons zijn. S’avonds zijn ze er dan toch en kunnen we gaan eten. Nu zijn we met z’n achten wat erg gezellig is. Morgen gaan we spullen uitdelen op scholen en ons laatste beetje les geven. Een filmpje en we kunnen weer lekker gaan slapen.
Donderdag zijn we wat laat met het ontbijt. Ook zijn we wat laat om de spullen uit te delen op 2 basisscholen in de dropjes. Als we alles opgeladen hebben snijdt één van de drama groep leden zich lelijk aan een stuk glas. Het ziet er ernstig uit dus we verbinden het snel en Jasper brengt hem naar het ziekenhuis in de buurt. Na een uurtje zijn ze weer terug met een paar hechtingen en we kunnen gaan uitdelen. De kinderen zijn blij en verrast. Rond 12 uur zijn we klaar en moeten we nog even wat les geven. Het is erg warm en de ‘leerlingen’ moeten ook andere dingen doen, dus we ronden het snel af. We overhandigen ze spullen en een overall om in te kunnen werken. S’middags gaan we chillen met de andere jongens. Jasper gaat met de ‘gids’ en Paul naar de kraftmarktet om te kijken hoe de houtsnijwerkjes gemaakt worden. Dit is erg leuk om te zien hoe ze daar mee bezig zijn. Ook een bushroute ontbreekt niet. Ondertussen is de generator al gerepareerd en hebben we s’avonds weer stroom. We genieten nog van het lekkere weer en bespreken met de drama groep hoe ze het verhuur het beste kunnen aanpakken. Wietze heeft een flyer voor hen gemaakt waarmee ze kunnen adverteren in het toeristengebied. We nemen alvast afscheid want morgen gaan we verder het binnenland in.
Vrijdag vertrekken wij tegen de middag naar Kuntaur, het binnenland van Gambia om daar een ambulance af te leveren bij een ziekenhuisje. Na een poosje onderweg in de hitte, raakt de ambulance overhit. Hierdoor moeten we even wachten om hem af te laten koelen. Twee auto’s hebben het niet door en rijden verder. Pas na een half uur komen ze er achter. Later vervolgen we onze weg. Het wordt al warmer en warmer. Koud water kopen is een goed plan. Bij Farafenni gaan we wat eten. Het is al rond 4 uur en we moeten nog het dubbele. Helaas duurt het eten lang, erg lang. We moeten 2 uur wachten voordat wij wat kip en wat patat of rijst krijgen. Dit is wel heel traag. Tegen 6 uur kunnen we onze reis weer vervolgen en we gaan er snel vandoor. Tegen het donker aan komen we in een klein dorpje waar we wat bedjes bij een ziekenhuis moeten afleveren. Deze bedjes moeten nog in elkaar gezet worden, maar dit lukt niet erg gemakkelijk. Een lastige klus en wat moeite kost ons toch al gauw weer een uur. Daarna kunnen we weer verder in het donker. Dit gaat wel vlot en tegen alf 10 komen we in Kuntaur aan bij Kairoh Garden. Het is nog steeds warm, zo’n 30 graden waarschijnlijk. We zijn moe en hebben geen zin meer in eten. Lekker naar bed, maar het kamertje is erg warm. Na een poos wakker te hebben gelegen willen we toch maar een filmpje kijken maar helaas zijn de stopcontacten hier erg slecht. Alle drie krijgen we een flinke stroomstoot, maar we kunnen uiteindelijk wel kijken.
Zaterdag gaan we de ambulance doneren aan het ziekenhuis. We moeten hem eerst nog klaarmaken in de warmte. Een verkoelende duik in de rivier doet goed. Na het doneren en de speech maken we ons klaar om kleren, speelgoed, dekens, pennen, schriften en allerlei andere spullen uit te delen in de omgeving in dorpjes. Dat is erg gaaf! Allemaal kinderen die achter ons aan rennen en blij zijn. Later overschrijden we de Go for Africa grens en komen we in een gebied waar nog nooit iemand van Go for Africa is geweest. In de verte van de verharde weg zien we een klein dorpje. We gaan de weg af en rijden er recht op af tussen alles door. De kinderen stellen zich netjes op in een rij en één voor één kunnen we ze wat geven. Dit is echt leuk om te doen! De hitte is wel lastig maar met genoeg drinken is het vol te houden. Zo doen we nog een paar dorpjes. De ene is drukker dan de andere en soms moeten we zowat vluchten voor de hebberige moeders. Al met al een super ervaring en terug op Kairoh Garden is het al donker en tijd voor een verfrissende duik met biertje in de rivier. Wat wil je nog meer? Na heerlijk eten kunnen we nog wat chillen en film kijken. Morgen een vrije dag.
Zondag begint lekker en warm. Even zwemmen en een beetje relaxen. Vandaag willen we een boottocht maken naar een nationaal natuurpark op de rivier the Gambia. We gaan met een bootje heen. Het is er prachtig! Erg mooie vogels worden gespot. We zien apen in de bomen lands de oever. En later echte nijlpaarden! Echt super! We blijven wel op gepaste afstand want het kunnen agressieve dieren zijn. Bij terugkeer komen we langs de betaalpost waar ook bij de heen vaart niemand was. We hoeven dus niet te betalen. Even later als we bijna terug zijn komt er een bootje aan. Die ramt ons bijna en verteld dat we moeten betalen want zij zijn de rangers van het park. Wij willen graag een identiteitskaart zien maar die hebben ze niet. We betalen niet. Daarop wordt er verteld dat ze de politie er bij halen en dat de kosten voor ons zijn. Is goed, maar wij betalen niet voor de politie. Terug bij Kairoh Garden komt na enige tijd wachten de politie. De AK-47 die hij om zijn nek heeft is doorgeladen en van zijn veiligheid af. De man begint vriendelijk maar al snel schiet hij uit zijn slof. We moeten niet zo brutaal zijn als witten en we hebben de wet overtreden. Daarom moeten wij direct het bootje in en mee naar de cel. De cel. Nee echt niet! Maar onderhandelen is er niet bij. Zelfs de brief van de hoofdcommisaris helpt niet. Dit is serieus. Net op dat moment heeft een persooneelslid van Kairoh Garden Alhagie aan de lijn. Deze wordt doorgegeven aan de agent en de situatie wordt weer wat gemakkelijker. Na een paar gesprekken over en weer en een dubbele prijs van een kaartje, krijgen we nog een preek van de politieman en vertrekt hij weer. We praten nog wat na en later kunnen we er weer om lachen. De avond is rustig en morgen gaan we weer terug naar Tanji. Het zal een lange dag worden in de auto. We doen er 12 uur over om terug te komen in Tanji. Daar is het koud. Maar wel weer goed om terug te zijn.
